Cross-Country Moving Checklist

Cross Country Moving Checklist to Plan a Long-Distnace Move

A cross-country move can be a daunting task, requiring careful planning and preparation. It’s recommended that you begin the process about eight weeks prior to your scheduled move date. Here’s a checklist to help you better plan your move.

Moving Across the Country Checklist: How to Move Cross-Country and Stress Less

8 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Find the right cross-country moving company for you.
  • Make sure your PODS moving container is scheduled to arrive at a date that gives you enough time to load all your belongings. You may want to have it as early as a few days, weeks, or a month before the day you’d like it to be picked up. You can keep your PODS container for as long as you need, a convenience that allows you to pack and load at your own pace and on your schedule.
  • Track down all of your important papers, such as car registration, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies, etc. We recommend that you carry these and any small valuables with you during your move.

Six Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Start organizing and packing your belongings. Make sure to label all of your moving boxes as you pack them to make the unpacking process much smoother. If you determine you need additional PODS containers for your move, give us a call and let us know so we can drop off the number of containers you need.
  • Hold a garage sale to get rid of items that are no longer needed.
  • Order packing and moving supplies. PODS offers fast, free shipping on all our supplies.
  • If your employer has offered to pay for your relocation, this is the time to figure out which expenses and responsibilities are yours and which are theirs. If they are reimbursing you after the fact, make sure to save all of your receipts and documentation. If you are paying for some or all of your relocation yourself, consult the IRS or your personal accountant to figure out which expenses might be tax-deductible.

4 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Arrange to have your utilities (gas, electric, water, cable) turned off or transferred.
  • If you are renting, start cleaning as you pack so that you don't have such an overwhelming task when moving day comes around. Remember, if you want to get your full deposit back, you will need to clean areas of your house that are typically ignored, such as vents and behind appliances such as the fridge and stove.

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Fill out a change of address form. These are available at the Post Office, or by visiting USPS
  • Transfer bank accounts if necessary.
  • If you plan to drive your car across the country, have your car serviced.

1 Week Before Moving Day

  • Cancel any local memberships.
  • Drain gas and oil from equipment like lawn mowers and snow blowers.
  • With just two or three days left before your cross-country move, finish loading your PODS container. You should receive an automated call from PODS informing you of your estimated pick-up time.
