Day of Service

Day of Service is the culmination of 7,833 Central Texas students’ philanthropic efforts and studies on poverty. The Drive, which comes to completion at the Day of Service, is a student-led food and coat drive that empowers students to advocate on behalf of those in need. Beginning with an Academic Assembly at the start of the school year, students are educated on the social concerns of hunger and poverty. The discussion continues into their classrooms with TEKS and STAARS supported lessons. During the month of November, an empty storage container is delivered to each school campus, which represents the emptiness of poverty and serves as a vehicle for food and coat collection. Student leaders from our 33 schools then use their time and talent to advocate and encourage their fellow 18,457 students to fill the PODS container with coats and food. On November 23, students, teachers and volunteers will join together to participate in the 2011 Day of Service. During the event, ten students from each school will celebrate their school’s achievements and unload the contents of their school's PODS container: food will go to the Capital Area Food Bank and coats will be loaded into Jack Brown Cleaners’ vans to be cleaned before donation to Coats for Kids.
